| Copyright © Global Times The latest fashion accessories in China are live fish and turtle key rings – and in China they are totally legal! These trinkets seal the unfortunate fish or turtle inside a 7cm plastic bag, where no doubt the oxygen will become quickly depeleted and there's no way of feeding them. The key rings are often sold outside subway entrances and train stations. But, as the Global Times points out, there is no existing animal protection law that would prevent their sale, despite an outcry from animal protection groups who want an immediate ban. Vendors claim that the coloured water in the key ring contains 'nutrients' which will keep the animal alive for months. "To put a living thing inside a sealed and confined space for profit is immoral and pure animal abuse," Qin Xiaona, director of the NGO Capital Animal Welfare Association, told the Global Times. "China only has a Wild Animal Protection Law. If the animals are not wild animals they fall outside the law's scope." Qin appealed to citizens not to buy the key rings, saying: "If nobody buys it, the market will die." Unfortunately, business was looking pretty good outside one subway station, with ten keyrings being sold in five minutes – although one of the purchasers had apparently bought hers to free the turtle inside it. | |

| Crazy stuff! No doubt most of these fish and turtles will die. I dont see how the turtles could live very long in a small sealed bag. | |

| I would hope that there are smarter Chinese people who'd realize that a fish or turtle can't live in a sealed bag. These are people whose ancestors sealed up their concubines and servants into tombs of their master, and look what happened to them? Surely they'd get the idea. | |

| ya know..... I never thought I would say it (and probably never will again); but I would support PETA on this ONE thing!! That is just pure crazyness!!! Not only will the fish and turtle starve, but they will also be forced to live in their own excrement without the benefit of being able to have a water change!!! Can we say ammonia burns?
P.S. yes, I am very well aware that PETA would be happy to do away with ALL pet ownership, from fish to horses and everything in between; which is why I said "I never thought I would say it". | |

| LOL yes, PETA can be a bit extreme. This is an obvious case of unethical treament of animals though. | |
