Went home last night after picking up my auction items and started getting fish into their new homes. For the Red Empress Cichlid - Protomelas Taeniolatus I got, I had to move my yellow lab fry into a tank with my powder blue fry. Got all the yellows out of the tank, and put the Empress in there. They were swimming around, checking out their new surroundings when I went to bed. I got up this morning to find them all dead on the bottom of the tank!

Didn't have time to check water parameters or even remove the corpses, so I will have no idea of the cause. Nothing showed visually, so I am clueless. Adding cichlids to a fully cycled cichlid tank that moments before held healthy cichlid fry, proved fatal!!

Totally confused and bummed... cursing mad crazy furious

Yup! I figured "what could be safer than putting cichlid fry in the cichlid fry tank?". Turns out, that wasn't my best choice. All the other fish were swimming normally when I left for work this morning, so I'm hoping they still are when I get home. It was only that tank that ended up wiped out! Since I was unable to remove the corpses, it will be pointless to try to check water parameters when I get home, so I'll be left without a clue. cry cry

That is crazy and sad at the same time. Cichlid fry are normally very hardy, especially in an established tank. Sorry for y'alls lost.

Did you acclimate them? I know you guys must have been late but it might be a case of water parameter difference between the bag and your tank. I am guilty as well of plop and drop but you know I always assume that Texas water are all the same. Sorry to hear about your loss.

I acclimated them, but probably not long enough. I was doing the round robin deal, drop the bag in the tank to acclimate temp, go to the next tank, etc, etc, then open bag and allow some water in, move to the next tank for the same, etc, etc, then drop them in, move to the next tank for the same, etc, etc, except with them. They spent a little more time in the bag while I was catching the yellows. They probably didn't get enough acclimation time with the water additon.

That's the closest I can figure. Everyone else is doing well, though.

Sorry about your loss, it must be something regarding different water qualities and temperature..

Amazingly, when I got home, I found two swimming in the tank!!

Got them moved to the tank with the other fry and they are doing well so far.

Gonna hafta do a full deep clean on the tank to make sure I didn't introduce anything to it I don't want in there. Could have been something on the counter where I set the bag while I was getting the other fry out of the tank. I thought I had cleaned it thoroughly, but I may have missed something.

Hopefully, the two survivors will make it to adulthood and be of opposite sex!

Sorry to hear the bad news. However, I'm stoked you have two survivors! I'll bet they grow up to be strong, sturdy fish. Would be awesome if they're a pair.
