They need to bring a dozen living specimens of each (6 of each sex if possible) and enlist the aid of successful cichlid breeders. Create a thriving captive population, carefully cross the offspring to avoid knowingly inbreeding for several generations, then go collect some new wild specimens for the breeders - and release several hundred captive breds back to the environment.... AKA start a stocking system...

Oh, and educate the natives to eat every introduced fish they catch - but throw back any native fish.
