I'm watching "Confessions: Animal Hoarding" on Animal Planet, and it's always about dogs and cats, some reptiles. Is there a such thing as fish hoarding? Does anyone know someone that takes in every kind of fish, breeds and keeps all the young, and keeps housing new fish to the point it negatively affects their lives and the well being of the fish?

HAHAHA. I think I asked the question in wrong place. It almost sounds like a crazy person in an asylum saying, "I'm not crazy, it's you guys." TOO FUNNY!

Nothing wrong is LOTS of tanks, but it has to take over one's life and livelihood to be a problem. If you have debated filters or fish food over groceries or meds, *then* there's a problem......

If ya ask my wife I'm sure she'd give you a different response than mine!.. To be fair to her though.. 7 weeks ago I hadn't owned a tank in decades.. now.. 4 up and running, one on my to-do list (48 g corner tank) and I'm still scouring CL for deals! Hmm.. maybe she would have a point..

    I'm a 'collector' not a 'hoarder'.

The difference between the two definitions is that a collector knows when they've hit the number of tanks/animals that they can properly take care of - and when they've gone over that limit. Then the collector will sell/rehome the excess and get back down to just the right number for his/her time.

A hoarder starts as a collector, but then does not realize when he/she has gone over the amount of tanks/animals that he/she can properly maintain. They continue to collect more, even as the originals become sicker and sicker. (Or the tanks get greener and greener and stinkier and stinkier)

Righto. I really don't think there is a such thing as a fish "hoarder" because fish are pretty sensitive to bad conditions and die easily, unlike a dog or cat or reptile which would linger in squalid conditions for a long time before they kick the bucket. I also don't think we keep our fish tanks in bad conditions, like in some LFS or chain store that keep their fish in a cesspool; the fish just wouldn't last very long.
