My first attempt at a homemade canopy with lighting....

1. The tank that i am putting on this black stand has brown trim so i figured I'd add some trim to cover the base of the tank

Next step... hook up the wiring

And by the way... I can't believe Home Depot was open on New Years Day!!! ONLY in Vegas!! LOL

The wiring is done... not as hard as I imagined... cut an extention chord and spliced the two fixtures to the chord.. I had some help from my step-dad for this

Heres what the canopy will look like on the tank when i actually move this tank and put it on the stand...

Looks great!! Just a little advice--- seal the inside of the canopy(painting it white reflex more light) if you dont , theres a good chance the wood will warp from moisture. I'm getting ready to make a stand and canopy for a 90 gal. I plan on painting the insides of both high gloss white.

Great looking project! A friend of mine once told me any Weight supporting structure under the tank should contact the tank and run all the way too the floor. I see those (what appear to be 2x6's) laying horizontal under the tank and they are attached to the supports that run to the floor. I don't know what difference it makes but this guy is an engineer and he said it does! Either way your tank/canopy set-up is really nice!

This is in no way a negative post about your stand!!! Just some FYI for future building perhaps.... after all if pet store stands are particle board and staples and they hold monster tanks, yours should be more than enough!

I hate to say this but those handles made my mind say "coffin" as soon as I looked at the last pic. Actually though I like the look as I'm strange in the decorating department. (I once had a glass top half coffin as a coffee table)
