After about three years, I finally cracked my filter and cleaned it. (ducks for cover) crazy

PennPlax 700 canister been running ever since I started it. Was pleasantly surprised actually. While it was filthy, the media actually wasn't falling apart. There wasn't as much crud as I thought there was going to be in there either. Alot, but not near what I was expecting.

Not even a snail or snail shell!! I'm impressed!

The tank is actually worse than the filter. It was (was) a heavily planted tank. I'm rescaping so I tore everything out. The amount of stuff that was under the crypts, bolbitus and driftwood was amazing! Wow is all I can say. I'm still sucking it all out.

Rinsed out the sponge media, replaced the poly-fil and put the filter back in service. Should be good for another three years ya think? funny

When we tore apart the big Oscar tank after getting rid of them the bottom under the stones was BLACK like sewage and smelled like it to. Thought I was going to pass out after two hours of cleaning! The whole house stunk from it. LOL
