A new species of Badis from eastern Myanmar has been described in the most recent issue of the journal Vertebrate Zoology.
Ingo Schindler and Horst Linke name the new species Badis juergenschmidti after German aquarist Jürgen Schmidt.
The new species is distinguished from other Badis species by its slender body and the following features of its colour pattern: (1) absence of a dark spot behind the gill cover; (2) broad, continuous dark bar on the caudal peduncle of mature males; (3) second bar on the caudal peduncle (in front of the one previously described) of uniform darkness, and (4) a white margin on the caudal fin of males.
According to the authors, the type locality of B. juergenschmidti is a very shallow small river with little current and a substrate of rocks, gravel and sand. The water was very soft (conductivity 6 µS), almost neutral (pH 6.4) and relatively warm (27°C).
