Say I get a 20 gallon for a sump for my 55...

what equipment do I need to make it work? Also, how do I keep it from overflowing my main tank or my sump during a power outage?

just make sumpe baffles(chambers) in your 20g
skimmer,fuge,and return chambers.
if your tanks not drilled buy an overflow kit and buy a return pump for the sump
and get a check valve so the sump doesnt over flow

where does the check valve go?

as i understand you run an overflow (same as refugium?) on the back of the 55, it drains into the sump, a return pump on the sump will push it back up and into the 55 gallon.

check valve goes where to prevent overflow? is this all I need to prevent power outage overflow?

your Fuge can be/should be in your sump. not the same as an overflow;)
yes the water drains into the sump the water goes through your chambers and the return pump pushes is back into the 55
in the link i provided it says to drill a hole in the return line inside your tank to breake the syphon if one were to accure! but a check valve is better IMO the valve can be placed on the return line!
