| The leaves of Indian almond trees are cropping up more and more in the hobby, especially since the nano tank and freshwater shrimp boom took off. South-East Asian in origin, these have traditionally been used in Betta and gourami keeping as owners claim they condition the fish and thicken their skins. They also stain the water, helping to provide blackwater conditions, and are thought by some to be mildly antiseptic too, helping to combat disease. Shrimps eat the leaves, so these are a natural water conditioner and food source in one. We use them to create a South-East Asian biotope look, and small catfish will enjoy hiding among them. | |
