| Ok so my son and I got into a discussion about wether or not you can use window cleaner ( Windex and the like) on aquarium glass. I said I had read someplace on line that if used enough times it could seep through the glass and hurt the fish. He said that is imposable that if that could seep through the glass then the glass wouldn't be able to hold water. What is anyone's opinion on this?

| Glass is a very viscus liquid, you can see in very very old windows how it has seeped down some, thicker at the bottom and thinner at the top. Mind you this takes 100's of years.
As for Windex seeping though the glass that would take 100-300 years by my guess.
The reason Windex should NOT be used on tanks is because of over spray, some may drift into the tank. They make glass cleaner wipes for fish tanks that has a cleaner on them that's non toxic to fish. |

| Yes I told him about them. I was thinking that same thing that it should just be wiped on with a rag. | |

| Just water and a squeegee work well and a razor for any hard water drips. |

| I use organic window cleaner. Totally harmless, and you could drink it if you really wanted too. | |

| Personally I don't worry with the outside of my glass much, but my tanks are working tanks not show tanks or store tanks. |

| I've used windex to clean the front glass on my tanks hundreds of times and never had any harmful effects. I use usually start spraying about middle ways on the glass and downward. Then I wipe the entire glass with a paper towel. You just have to very careful not to get any in the tank. | |

| yea i have used windex on the outside glass for a long time also with no effects just spray it on a paper towl in a different room from your aquarium then go start cleaning the glass. There are better glass cleaners out there though that dont streak or leave marks at all | |

| glass is a random amorphous substance. just like thr gloves in lab they are more resistant to some chemicals than others. i use windex and have never had a problem. knock on wood | |
