Interesting, I just went with return pipes going straight down and well drilled with holes in my 240g, works quite well.

so far i have everything for this project EXECPT the PVC pipe i need for the trim!
im going with the grey pvc becuase if i use white it will look kinda funky , the tank with a weirdo white trim around the top??
i thought a darker color would look better

do you guys think a "Quiet one 5000" pump is too much flow for my 100G?

alk think to your self too much flow is always better then not enough plus ur putting a shut off valve there so if it is too much you can adjust your flow rate by turning the valve slightly closed righ

swing check valve allows water to go one way and not the other make sure the arrow is pointing the direction of the flow

do i need it?

yes you do if the power fails all the water will lead through that line and into your sump and possibly overflow its like 3 bucks and install in on the line going to the tank and after the shut off valve

ok but iv read about sumps and it say that you should dril a 1/4" hole about 1" under the water in your tank on you return line.
that way if power fails and water starts getting syphoned back into the sump the syphon will stop becuase the hole will let in air and break the syphon
also i read that you keep your sumps water level pretty low Incase somthing like that happens, you have room in the sump for the water beeing returned back into it through the return line
and i dont see a check valve on that pic in the link but i always hear bout em in sumps

alk stop being skimpy and spend the 3 bucks get a swing check valve its not going to kill u if you install one and let me know if you need help i can plumb that in less then an hour

imma need some help getting my baffles set up in my sump though!!!
im still kinda not sur on to place em!
this tank is goin to be set up as a SW tank later on and i want the sump for that reasone!
but the way i want the sump is mainly for marine use! if i set it up for SW and use it for FW in the mean time ill have like 2 whole chambers empty
i plan on having 3 chambers!
1 for media,fuge ,and skimmer
its gona be a pretty empty sump for a FW tank lol
any ideas on what else i can put in their for freshwater so it dont look empty?

just use bio balls and lava rock through out the sump that way you still have the good bacteria forming in there
