| I have the opportunity to get 2 blood jewel red cichlids, or what ever they are called... I am wondering, can they go in a tank with Jack Dempseys? | |

It would only be 4 fish total in the tank. 75 gallon.

| The name was given to the Jack Dempseys after the famouse boxer, because they are extremely aggressive and beat the Sh#t out of everything. They need a lot of territory. How big is he now? And do you have two of them? | |

How big is he now? And do you have two of them? 2 of both sets. The Jacks are large 6'' and 10'', but VERY docile. Not aggressive at all. He was in a tank before mine with a Pacu who beat the cr@p out of him, and he's super timid/docile. The Jewels are 3 inches.

| I always here people say that they have docile/timid Dempseys, but I have never had one. Haha. I guess I just have bad luck. You know your fish better than i do, but worse thing is they don't like each other and you have to take them out. It is a Gamble either way. Good luck | |

| I would say no. Those jacks are a "pair" and they will get nasty. | |

| And they aren't African, so they can't go with the Fronts. hmmm. Guess I'll pass.
Just more money to spend on Calvus, and Fronts.

| I would be more worried about the jewels killing the jacks! Those guys are very mean and aggressive and should only be mixed with their own kind with a QT tank standing by for recovery of whoever got their @$$ kicked. |

| i would say you could do it. my jacks i use to have and it sounds like the same with yours were not aggesive at all. even when they laid eggs they would get bullied by smaller fish. my male jack was 10" and i had some convict in the same tank 2". when the convicts had babies the little male would bit the jack in the mouth. the jack ended up hinding in the corner. so long story short jacks are not as mean as everyone makes them out ot be!!!! how ever if the jewels are to small they could become a meal. | |

| The Jewels are not small enough to be a meal. They were housed with Severums, Convicts, Pikes, and tons of other random fish. So I don't know how aggressive they will be.
I am thinking of selling my 2 Jacks now anyways. I mean, I can't put anything with them, so I don't know...
The Hubby wants to turn the 75 gallon into a cichlid tank, but eh... not really feeling all those typical cichlids.

If you are sotra attached to your jacks then just get them a 55G by them selves...or sell them lol... Africans are great to keep bc there is such a wide rage of them and the COLOR is amamzing. They are very active and VERY prolofic breeders. If you are doing an African Tank I would do all one species or a mix of all males. ( LOTS OF THEM) Over stocking is good with Africans.

| The Jacks are in a 55 now. I just don't know how I feel about them... I mean, I feel bad they are in a 55 because the male is pretty big, and they are in my bedroom, so no one gets to see them. I think they could potentially have a better home. | |

| Depending on the size of the pike cichlid, if the jewels could could handle him, they should be able to handle the Dempsey's. I also agree with David, I've had several Dempsey's and they always got bullied around. | |
