The crab prolly ate them all, was the tank cycled?
Gold fish, crabs and common plecos should never be put into a 10g no matter what!
All those fish have different water and temp needs!

the tank size was the problem. he had way to many fish for a 10 gallon tank!!! i would also suggest letting the tank cycle next time and why dont you get your freind to sign up on this forum. i wish him luck and let us know what becomes of this.

Very bad combo of fish. common plecos and gold fish are poop machines

Lots of poop = high levels of ammonia.

Was the bacteria fed when the tank was empty?

The store he bought them from should have never sold him that combo knowing they would be going in the same tank lol

I agree with you on this one, but with those type of fish I'm sure it was hard to avoid the spike. Good luck with the restart of this tank I am sure we have all experienced problems at one time or another.

If its a tank for a little girl I would go with mostly live bearers, especially if your giving the guy a 30g. 3 fancy guppys in a 10g or 8 fancy guppys and 1 rubber lip or bristlenose pleco in a 30g. If they get male and female I'm sure you could 'rehome' the fry into some of your fishes belly's.
If he can find them get 2 banana plants, they are easy and hardy and will help keep the tank a little nicer. I managed to keep them alive when I was 6y/o and had a 20g.

DO NOT ADD MORE THAN 3 FISH PER WEEK!!!!!! That will give the bacteria time to catch up

The only chemical that any tank needs is a dechlorinator (prime), throw the rest of that funky stuff out, its pointless and can accumulate in the water and become harmful.
