| i am adding a UV sterilizer to my pond and i wanted to know if it should go before the filter or after??
or should i hook it up to its own pump and let it filter just the water? | |

| I believe you can do either, but I'm thinking placing it after the filter keeps it cleaner, less gunk buildup to block the UV light. | |

| I agree with Fishface30, After the filter will help extend the benefit from the UV filter. | |

| thanks alton, so i wasn't making up the answer! i've never owned a UV sterilizer, but at one time considered it. from what i've read, keeping it cleaned out keeps it working effectively since the UV light has to penetrate the cells/spores to work its magic.

| I use one I move from tank to tank where needed. They are great and I do reccomend anyone who has MTS to have one. As for the pond it is just common sense to keep it as clean as possible to allow it to work better. Like you mentioned if it gets clogged up the UV Light will not do as good a job if it is clean. | |

| UV filters do work great and the best part is you don't really need to leave them on all the time. A few of my friends only run them a one/two days a week in their ponds to keep everything clear. As everyone else has said provide the cleanest water to the UV filter. Depending on their design they get clogged easily. Have fun with the new toy! | |

| yeah i havent decided how long and when i want to run it.. i was thinking of running it for the first week everyday for a few hours. then maybe like twice a week for 6hrs at a time but i think that it will mostly be trial and error as i will just have to keep an eye on the water quality | |
