I know when it comes to SW everyone pushes hard for people to quarantine. I myself never have since I only get livestock from one specific store. But what I am most curious about is that most of the FW tanks I see on here (and everywhere) hardly anyone talks about a QT. I see full setups with gorgeous fish and the person will pick up more fish at Petsmart or PetCo and just put them right in with their fish. Don't you worry about disease? Also I have heard people say they did QT for 1 week while a true QT could take 4-6 weeks before an illness shows.

Just my random fish thought for the day...

I use a QT tank if I get from shops like Petco and stores I don't know. and always 6 weeks. If I don't have a tank available I use plastic bins. ( I use these for the larger fish as I don't have a 30 gal to keep cycled or stored for QT)

I don't QT never have probably never will I tend to only buy from other reefers most of whom I know well and know their systems. many LFS use hypo salinity to keep fish looking disease free and healthy until you get them into your reef then they get sick and sometimes die rapidly. I have gotten Tangs that got ich outbreaks but I discovered the cure 3 yrs ago so now I can cure ich without ever removing one fish from my tank. I find if something works I stick with it.

I have never quarantined and stock. Maybe I should , But have seldom had a problem with new fishes in the last 15 years or so. I also DO NOT purchase from big markets such as Petsmart or Petco , etc. Most of my purchases are from a couple of small shops that QT there stock before selling . Or from other hobbyists .
Just my 2 cents worth ,, Ray

That is the way that I do it too. Buy only from one store that I know has good stock. Hell most of them are raised by the owner. I just wondered why some sites seem so strict about that you absolutely must QT and most actual hobbyists don't seem to do it.

Maybe it is because they are recommending to the newbie who gets everything from the big box stores.

Possibly you are right . It also applies to you if you buy wild stock that has been imported . Then I would quarantine for sure . Also any Native stock that I net in local streams.

Remember though if you do QT a fish that meens an extra moving of the fish to put him in the main tank later and the more times you move a fish around the more stress they are put under....I usually dont QT them when i get them just put them in the main tank so i dont have to move them again in a few weeks I do have a good UV sterilizer to minimize any spreading of disease....

After an outbreak of columnaris brought in by some new fish a few years back I always QT new fish for at least 3-4 weeks. I have some nice LFS I buy from (I never buy fish from Petsmart or Petco) but I still QT. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Even the best LFS sometimes have problems.

Most of my tanks are species tanks, so for every new species it is usually in a new tank to its own. I QT anything from my lfs, 95% of the time there isn't an issue.
I QT fish that have been shipped to me, an ich outbreak will happen on them from time to time due to temp flux and stress.

The only time I don't QT is when they have come from a local hobbyists tank that has good healthy stock.

Or they have had a short temperate trip in the mail and are from a good hobbyist with good healthy stock.
