| Hi, I am in the middle of putting my substrate in my new tank...and the guy at the fish store said I need to put a layer of gravel over my laterite....to give the roots a place to take hold... I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere... should I do it? I am at the decision point and need to make up my mind asap... PLEASE advise! Mary | |

| Laterite will float so yes you need to top it with gravel or sand. You can use pea gravel and pool sand from a hardware store as it in much cheaper than a pet store. |

| I was planning on just finishing off with the sand I got at the pool store....but this guy suggests that I should put a layer of gravel between the laterite and the rest of my sand... do you think it is necessary? Would it be helpful to the plants? | |

| The gravel isn't necessary but you will want a good 2" of sand over the laterite. That will give your roots plenty of space to grow and the layer will be thick enough to prevent the laterite from coming up over time. |

| be careful baking driftwood best to boil it. If you do bake it at 175 to 200 degress (no higher) for about a half hour. If to big for a pot to boil put it in the bathtub and every 10 min pour boiling water on it. |
