| I just got these free from a friend. 7 of them. she pointed to a dempsey in another tank sayin that's the mom, but I want to confirm...these fish look like convicts to me with the stripes for some reason... any idea what they are for sure? | |

| 2 or 3 inch maybe not even that. she did only have one dempsey in the tank with a bunch of other random cichlids, i thought about the hybrid thing. hopefully they turn out neat... another guy i know got 9 of them, so thats 9 + 7 = 16 lil ones plus she had a lot more in her tank... do they normally have THAT many babies? | |

My convicts regularly spit out about 100 babies, and by the time they are big enough to catch (I leave them in the tank with other cichlids) I have about 15-20.... If I were to seperate the parents into a breeder tank, I could easily have close to that amount survive.

| were there convicts in with the dempsey? She might have picked up the convict eggs and became a surrogate. I just don't see dempsey in those fish. |

| I agree, since I've been shopping dempsey's heavily as of late - I've looked at quite a few banches of juvies. Do not look anything like those.
Firemouths did seem to look like that. I've just glanced at those - no expert.

| My fire mouth does not look like that. not to say its not some sort of hybrid. My fire mouth has a very long and fancy looking top fin. And its actually turned red along the top now. | |

| They aren't septems-they are quite rare in the hobby and don't look like that.
I've seen convict x texas, firemouth, and a few others. and yours look a lot like one of the hybrids I've seen in the past. Sorry..
