They may just take a while to "get ready". It may take a few days of bloodworms and conditioning, but you'll get it.

When I'm trying to breed a fish, it's a heavy and steady diet of bloodworms and brine shrimp every day for about a week and then they are ready. Also, are you using frozen or freeze dried bloodworms? Frozen is much better.

Good. I would say if you do that for a few days, you'll get them ready.

I'm concerned about her laying on her side. What exactly do you mean? She should be flaring at him too.

Yes I'd like to see what she's doing. She should be swimming all around. Do you have the vase in the males tank? Are you trying to breed them?

The water level should be no more than six inches, and you should have something in there he can build his bubble nest on. A piece of styrofoam cup works well. Or maybe a leaf. When he builds the nest, and she's paying attention and looks plump, they're ready.

Mine had been building bubble nests (I think they are nests) under lily leaves.

I'm a member of IBC and have had successful spawns. But that was after failing a couple of times! One stupid thing I did is after the first spawn and I was removing the female(you have to or she'll get killed) I bumped the styrofoam and knocked enough of the eggs off that the male gave up. I was so mad at myself!
Oh, and spawning does seem to relate to barometric pressure drops like in many fish, so if it's about to rain you're bound to get a bigger better bubble nest which impresses the lady.
Once you get the spawn, that's when the real work begins!

It does look like she's plump. That's a good sign. And until he builds a nest she probably won't do much more, so lowering that water is going to work wonders. Also, slip a sponge over the filter intake. This will do two things--save the fry from being sucked in, and give them a food source. The fry when first free swimming will feed on infusoria which grows on the filter. They're really too small for BBS the first couple of days.

You can use a somewhat fine pore sponge, or a piece of sponge from like an aquaclear filter. Cut the piece big enough to fit around the intake plus maybe 1/2" around extra. Cut a slit in the center so you can slip the sponge over the intake and let the filter run slow. Bettas don't like fast moving streams so they'll appreciate the trickle. The infusoria can take a couple of weeks to establish. There is a way to culture some using a lettuce leaf and I forget what else, because I had the sponge in place and didn't worry about it.

Another thing you could do is add a sponge filter that operates off of an air pump. The kind we use with our linear air pump systems to run multiple tanks. Kens fish usually sells them cheapest. Some LFS carry them in limited supply but Petsmart and Petco do not.

pillier refer to my tutoral. She must have her vertical stripe before even trying to put her in with the male.

pillier your water is way to deep . No more then 5" so the male doesn't have so far to go to take care of the eggs and later the fry.
