I picked up this fish for free today at a LFS. I think it is an SP44 but don't know for sure. Does anyone know what this is?

That is 100% not an sp44... Looks more South American than African to me.

The fish is a west african cichlid known as tilapia buttikofferi. Pretty easy going fish till they hit 3" or so then the devil takes them over. They are mean as hell and get about a foot long.

Thanks, Hongknot...It looked like some type of african cichlid when I saw it in the LFS...but now looking at it in my tank, I am not sure what it is.

Hes also illegal to own in Texas, according to parks and wildlife department.

Dont release it in any pond stream or lake. Take it back to the store you got it from, and trade it for something legal.

Yeah. This fish is the reason that a lot of Lake Vics are becoming extinct.
