I went to home depot today and i found some strip lites and i was wondering if it was safe to lay them on the the top of the tank or would i have to make legs or is there legs i could buy

Definitely, thats what i do on one of my tanks... just be careful not to let it get wet. Make sure you have good lids on the tanks. they rust quicker than the ones on stands or hanging.

shop lights are the cheapest way to go. I have them in both my canopy tops on my show tanks with aqua-glow bulbs.

I hang them with chain from the ceiling. That way when you nee to get into the tank you just use 2 S hooks to raise the chain.
