| I'm planning a 10gal planted betta tank. Are there any good tank mates for bettas? It would be a male. |

| most fish can be kept with bettas relatively peacefully, especially in planted tanks. i have never done it myself. so i dont have any experience to back this up, but i know plenty of people who do keep other fish mixed with betta(s). when it come to keeping more than one male betta... it becomes necessary that they be kept in a fairly large tank with lots of decor to break the line of site. for example... a friend of mine keeps 2 males in a 55 planted tank.
in a ten gallon the options are limited a bit. you would want to pick a few small fish with similar water requirements such as tetras, danios, guppies, mollies, platys, swordtails, etc (many many others). some of the fish listed above are schooling fish and so you would want to have 5 or more of them, which means that the ten gallon tank would be full after adding just the one species. i.e. 5 cardinals and a betta is about all i could imagine fitting into a 10 gallon.

| guppies, mollies, platys, swordtails are out due to the finnage. Most betta will attack them because they have a slight resemblance to bettas. I'm thinking 3 panda cories and possibly a few shrimp and snails. Of course the shrimp would be the $.20 feeder variety ;) in case they get eaten. How does that sound? |

| Since betas are kinda agressive, can I put them with my oscars? Ive always wanted a male beta, but according to petsmart they said I shouldnt. I have a 55 gallon with 2 small oscars, 1 small spotted puffer, 1 dragonfish, 3 corys, 2 plecos, 2 ciclids 2 perch and the crem dela crem, 2 small largemouth bass, lol. All between 1-2 inches, except for the plecos who are about 6-7 inches. | |

| That puffer needs salt. You need to get a brackish tank to move him into soon. |

| Ive never seen him do it, only thing ive seen him do is curl into a ball one mornign when I woke up, thought he was asleep, lol hes actually very very agressive, hes nipped at everyone in my tank except my large oscar, but including my bass. When I put rosy red minnows in there he even chases them, but hes still too small to eat one. | |

| I could of sworn the price tag said spotted and not figure 8. Ive seen the figure 8 before(I think) and his patterns are just full of spots. Grren with black spots on top with a all white bottom half | |

| Most tetras are to aggressive to be with a male betta and mollies need 20+ gallons and salt. | |

| That's a crazy tank you got going there....I've been wondering as well, if I could put a spotted puffer in my 100g. Currently house 2 three inch oscars, jack dempsey, festae and convict. People were saying the same thing that the puffers would become fish food. I would like to put a betta in my tank as well, but I see the JD tearing the betta fins to shreds. | |

| The green spotted puffer really needs a brackish tank to thrive. They *can* live in freshwater, but it shortens they're lifespan. Since I bought mine (one of them from Wal-mart) and put them in a brackish tank they've doubled in size; from about an 1.5" to 3" in just under 5 months. In the wild the GSPs are born in freshwater and then make their way up brackish streams into the ocean where they live as adults. They can live in fw, but for their longevity they need brackish water and eventually marine conditions. | |

| wow, where to start here....original poster it depends on the betta type you want as to what you can have. most all the wild caught bettas will live togather peacefully...i keep a small planted tank of wine red bettas that are stunning, i have also kept picta and a few other species. as far as the splendins..crowntails,veiltails,halfmoons, placats and such....those males or most of them will be more aggressive to other males and females alot of the time...the red are proven to be more aggressive than the blue also. you can also add many females togather in one tank as they will get on fine. the wife has kept males with lots of different tropicals, she currently has one with some choprae tetras. i also have one in a planted 10 with 5 rummynose and some cherry shrimp.
now, on to the poster with the oscars and bass and several others. first....for no reason should a betta be added to that mix as it will become food sooner or later. i think i missed it but what size tank do you have these fish in?? as far as your puffer, i know little to nothing about them but i do know when reading the tags about the fish at walmart and some other pet stores its a crapshoot at best, often they are very wrong. plus that walmart employees are not trained at all in aquatic life, asking them questions about fish and compatability is on par with asking a 4 year old how to get from jacksonville to reno.....they have no idea but will gladly try to explain how, lol. keep in mind that at any given time you could wake to find only a 9 inch oscar left in your tank. hope all goes well for you and please ask lots of questions.

| Yes Betta's can be kept with community fish. Also female betta's more then one can be kept in one too. Female betta's are very colorful and can add to a community tank. | |
