what is good protein skimmer to get? what should the gph be for a 150 gallon tank?

It's good for up to 150 gallons.
not sure how many gallon pure hour it skims.
You can find 1 for under $100.

i like to go a little higher rated myself i use a super skimmer 125 and a super skimmer 220. although i could have used the 125 on my 90 i opted for a 220 on it and the 125 i kept as a backup which i ended up putting it on my 30l/40 breeder that is eventually going to be a frag tank.

i prefer the super skimmers on tanks up to 200 gallons myself and the warranty is great from esu, my pump had a short in it and esu replaced it free, all i had to do was fax thema copy of my sales receipt and i got to keep the old pump which gave me a spare needlewheel impeller :) )

big question is are you using it hang on or in sump? there are different types there are hang on unit which have to be hung on the tank (could also be hung on a sump in the area where the water from the tank enters the sump), then there are in sumps which require a sump or refugium to use these typs, and then there are some (like the coralife super skimmer (65, 125, and 220) that can be run either in sump OR hang on. again i would say go for a skimmer that is rated OVER what your tank size it (example: 150 gallon tank use a skimmer rated for 175 or more gallons)

Seaclone 150's are common and easy to find.

I use the Seaclone 100 on my 75 and it's awesome.

i protien skimmer uses foam fractionazation to remove organic wastes from the water column. basically a skimmer creates microfine bubbles in a cylinder which disolved organics wastes attach to so they can be dumped out, skimmers will use one of 3 methods to make the microbubble airstone, needlewheel pump, or an air venturi.
