I was wondering if you had to have a top on your aquarium? Right now I don't have anything over my 46 gallon bowfront because the glass lid is cracked. I was thinking of going to home depot or lowes and have them cut out a new one, but I just wasn't sure if you HAD to have something covering.

I don't on most of mine.

Water will evaporate faster and you have the risk of a fish making the jump. Thats about it.

Do you need a glass lid? 858205

I have open tops on 2 sw tanks and every tank except 1. Since you are in Texas, keep in mind, the open tops will keep the tank cooler as well.

I have both and like to have tops so I dont have to fill them every other day. Plus my dithers jump tank if there is no lid. Hd told me they dont cut glass anymore, well at least here in Norfolk.

I cover all my tanks with heat resistant polypropylene mesh put into screens frames from lowes, the reason is gas exchange and jumpers the screens allow the gas to escape but not the fish yes theres evaporation but gas exchange is important plus theres nothing worse then losing a 100 dollar fish because it went carpet surfing.

I run open top regardless of jump risk. The benefits directly to gas exchange outweigh the risks of losing a fish or two, or the annoyance of topping off; though topoffs can be mitigated with an ATO.
