| I didn't see this asked, forgive me if it was, What kind of salt did you use? Did you just 'crack the seal' or has it been on the shelf a month or two?.. -peace JT | |

| better late than never..
some water out of the tap might be soft.. and store bought water can be the same.. if you add salt.. guess what.. you done mede extreme soft water.
some fish can not live in very soft water
never listen to fish store people.. that is why your in a fish forum ... I like most people here have f.. up to many times and have learned by our error..
reverse water osmosis is what I used... yes used a bit of salt.. and killed half my fish.. hard lesson to learn

| I'm thinking add salt, you make it harder? Alot of my friends use tap.. city/well.. I "be cool" but it's really no good for chemical and mineral reasons. I asked the salt question just because you should avoid the 'iodine' laced salt... I go Ro/Di.. and add "equalibrium"... 1 gram per 5 gal will get your drops right...aka 9 grams per 5 gal will take the api GH meter 9 drops to turn green. Then...let it bubble for a day or two, then get your ph correct, it usually comes out at about 6.5.. a little under 1/8tsp of alkaline buffer should get it right....let that bubble for a while... then get your temp right, and do your W/C.. = Gotta make your water :).. I was lucky enough to study under an "old timer" who ran a water treatment plant, you wouldn't believe what comes out of your faucet! - Peace JT | |

| Oh yea, I throw a tbs per/5gal of sea salt in there too.. and hindsight being 20/20 that 1/8 of alkaline buffer will put you just about 7 ph... and it seems once it's been in the tank for a day or two you need to 'top it off' to keep it around 7.2/7.3....then it will hold until you W/C again ............always test! ..... -peace JT | |
