Thought I had it going on, just waiting for the two light-yellow females (one CT the other VT) to get old enough to breed to my yellow-orange Butterfly VT male (Sunstreaker).

Well, the CT 'female' got huge. Didn't think much of it since my irredescent blue CT and Purple CT females got big as well. To make life easier on me (lower the amount of tanks) I went and got some glass and have been creating 'corner' sections for the females within the planted/decorated male tanks. Worked wonderfully with my Copper HM male and his Black VT female and Salmon CT female. He loves to check each woman out - and they feel safe because they have plants to dart into. He's staying pretty calm since both females are showing horizontal. Just like my DoubleTail Butterfly male is behaving with his future mate in the corner behind glass.

So I decided to do the same for my 'Sunstreaker'. Needless to say, it was obvious that the CT yellow female is NOT a female - but a young male who is just starting to grow his finnage. So I pulled him back out and put the smaller VT yellow female in. Already beginning to doubt that this one is a female by the reaction of Sunstreaker.

Grrrrrr!!!!! Am I ever going to find a yellow woman for Sunstreaker?!?!? Now I've got to buy another heater and split another 10G in half for my unexpected males!!!!

SC don't beat yourself up about sexing them. LOL I have had some that were close to three month old and still can't tell. sometimes the females don't develop the egg tubes when young until they are much older. I had a friend who is one of the countries top breeders that sent me a fish that she and I called he/she because neither of use could tell what it was. She thought it was a female when she sent it to me but it turned out to be a big male and this fish was already three months old. so now when every we talk about this fish we refer to him as the he/she fish.LOL

Guess I could always breed these yellows to a deep red finned salmon female CT and keep their daughters for each others future mates - huh?
