| Now I'm doubting the sex of a few other females. Some have become to 'crabby' to keep in the planted tank - while others have stayed laid-back and leave everyone alone. So I'm thinking that the 'crabby' ones are actually young males. Here's some pics: 'crabby Purple CT' [img] [/img] 'crabby Blue CT' [img] [/img] 'The two meanies together' [img] [/img] 'Meek Cambodian CT' [img] [/img] 'Small laidback yellow CT' [img] [/img] 'Small laidback White CT' [img] [/img] 'Oversized laidback Blue Marble CT' (Possible half-giant) [img] [/img] So what are ya'lls opinions on their sexes? | |

| Well it's hard to tell. Some pictures are a little fuzzy. What are the ages of them? Also can you see any egg tubes on them? They may still be developing but here goes. Remember these are just wild guesses.
#1 Purple CT - To fuzzy to guess
#2 Blue CT - Anal fin looks long for a female
#3 Two meanies - on left, anyones guess. On right, I think I can see an egg tube, female.
#4Meek Cam - To fuzzy
#5 Laid back yellow CT - Hard to tell. Anal may be to long for female.
#6White CT - Looks male. Again long anal and ventrals
#7Blue Marble CT - Wide dorsal along the body. Could be male or female PK. Don't see any ventrals. Are they missing or just laid back? Looks like a Piebald. No color on the head area.
These must be very young and not many signs of maturity. Give them a few more months to develope so you can tell easier what they are, in the meantime I would seperate any that seem to be fighting. Again these are just guesses and could be all wrong. LOL

| Some female will not get along with any other bettas male or female. Be careful they can do alot fo damage in just a few moments. My (7) females were in a 55 for 2 years together then one day all H*ll broke lose ind by the time I could get to them (within 2 min) 1 was dead, 1 mortally wounded and 2 really in bad shape. You just never know with bettas. |

I have had almost the same thing happen, though I had 2 females in a 55 and one got bigger than the other and started to bully the smaller one, so I had to split them up before it became to dangerous for the small one. Females can go either way as far as getting along or fighting, males... well, we all know how males can be... (I will leave it at that before I get into trouble, lol)

| The two meanies locked up immediately after I took Ruby II out. (meanies are the Purple CT and Blue CT) I've now got them side-by-side with fully developed big males. Seeing if any of the big males react to them like females (make bubble nests to show off) or just try to fight them like another male.
Oversize blue marble/piedbald has very tiny ventrals.
I'm going to be very dissapointed if I ended up with a bunch of young males and few females.

| On the marble if the ventrals are short them chances are it's a female. As for the rest only time will tell. Hope you get what you want from them. Let us know in a few months with pics. Good luck. | |

| Surely neither one will react to a member of the SAME sex by building a nest! | |

| Hard to tell. Occasional I and others have had the rare female that will build a small nest. Look for the egg tube just behind the ventral fins. | |

| Yes I keep my jared female on one shelf together and they sometimes do. But even though it's rare it has been known to happen. Females will even flare at each other. It's usually a female that is REALLY ready to breed. LOL. The best way to tell male from female is the egg tube on the female. | |
