| People are well aware that there are cameras in a store. We have security cameras in our store with stickers on the windows stating so. We still get broken into on the average of ever few months. Last summer we got broken into 3 times in a two month period. Although we got them on tape we were told by police there is nothing that can be done unless you are able to get finger pints or an eye witness. So not only is there thousands of dollars in inventory gone but the cost to replace a $500.00 window every time they throw a rock threw it. It's disgusting how nervy some people are. The guy in this video knows full well that they will never catch him. Videos like this are usless unless you can get a clear shot of the face. Hents the wearing of the hat. It's very sad. | |

| Even if they were to take him to court with a good lawyer he would plead not guilty and say he never owned a hat like that and also the employee that he talked to prior to the theft did not actually see him take the coral out of the tank so there is no eye witness to it. Also he could turn right around and sue them for harassment. There is a very fine line between what to do and what not to do. Would it end up harming the store owner and costing him more money in the long run? Yes probably. This guy knew exactly what he was doing. Chances are he has done it many times before at other places. | |

Police.. "Somebody's trying to kill me!!!" "Well, let us know when he does - we'll be right there." What about some eye-level cameras? The cops may be useless, but these shops shouldn't lie down.

| We've been broken into 5 times in 2 years. Our cameras are up high to get them actually opening the cash register or braking into the doors or windows. To have enough cameras to get those shots plus eye level shot is a huge expense for added cameras. For Mom and Pop store like ours or that mans fish store the expense would be astronomical. We have four cameras in our store and stickers on the front windows. They don't care they still brake in. No matter where you would put them at eye level there are to many things sitting around in the store ( mid isle counters, shelves, inventory) to have that many cameras. You would have to literally walk around with a camera right in your hand on each persons face. | |

| Bars? Not exactly neighborly-looking, but more effective than just glass.
The cameras would be more expensive than repeatedly replacing the window?
Or what about a big dog? | |

| We did think about bars and there is also some special kind of class that a cop told us about but that is VERY expensive and we just don't have the money for it.......To lock a dog up in the store over night somehow just seems inhuman to me. | |

Nah, no worse than locking him up in the house while you're at work.

| Well been from the old school train of thought I am a strong believer with animals and children that if you can't stay home with them then don't have them. Now I do realise with the economy the way it is now days that in most families both partners have to work so don't totally freak out on me. I do understand. | |

| Just put a pool in front of the door. Put sharks in it with lasers on their heads, no one will break in after that.
Overnight break-ins are one thing, but if you're getting robbed in broad daylight; then that tank is out of line of sight anyway. I don't care what retail business it is, if the opportunity presents for it to walk out of the store... it will.

My dog would be dead if I held myself to that kind of standard. I think she's content to nose around the yard or sleep in the living room if we have to go out.

Don't do this.... that is a bad idea! Locking/leaving a dog at home while you're at work is one thing, but to leave an animal locked up in a fish store as a security measure is whack.... The two comparisons aren't even close! Something needs to be done in the store but putting "Fido" as night time security isn't the answer. This "crime" was done in broad daylight during business hours, a criminal like that is tough to deal with, and just for liability reasons, if someone breaks into your house and your dog mauls them, you can be held liable! (I know that's stupid) but it happens! So if someone breaks into your business over night you're really risking things by having a dog "Gaurding" the joint! JB

| Well bars would look bad for business I think, and it still wouldn't keep someone from breaking the glass anyways. My family has a restaurant and has been broken into a few times. With the layout of the space the front is all windows and you can see right to the order counter. We display the emptied cash register drawer on the counter and have a light shine on it at night. Least if a burglar wants cash they'd see it would be hopeless.
I agree with popbosephus, "I don't care what retail business it is, if the opportunity presents for it to walk out of the store... it will." We've had customers steal potted houseplants from the dining area in broad daylight. Why would you not want the front tank displays on watch? If anything it's to keep someone from sabotaging the display tanks.
