Black Algae in new tank and other questions Empty
PostSubject: Black Algae in new tank and other questions   Black Algae in new tank and other questions Icon_minitime2/7/2011, 10:40 pm

Need some ideas of best way to combat this issue. Going to give as much info as I can think of to help me decide.
* = things i have questions about

Not really long and bushy like the Black Brush algae, not sure if it could be cyanobacteria, and there is some green algae on the other 2 small rocks and a couple of spots in the gravel.

Just picked up another tank (15g tall) for my shrimp and snails, but before I add anything I want to have it cleared up.

It's a tank that has been running 2 years, has 3 little somethings grey fin tail something-er-another fishies in it.

I brought home about 70 percent of their water. Tested all perameters before I added more water, all good and ph was 7.4 to 7.6.
Tiny little marineland pump/filter with charcoal pad and bio wheel and a really old bulb (going to replace asap). Heater set to 76, but no thermometer to say if it's accurate.

I removed all the plastic plants as they were covered in it.

A large rock has quite of bit of it as well, but I didn't want to upset the fish too much, so i left it in so far.
I was going to scrub it, maybe boil it, maybe bleach water it and let it dry - * but wanted opinions first. (all the info I can find on treating this has been 5 or so years ago, so I want to see if there are better updated ways first).

*Also the filter tubes are full of algae. What should I do about that? replace?
but even getting some algae in my big tank tubes with an excellent filter

I added some plant from my larger tank for them to hide in and to start using up the algaes nutrients. I will add more plants soon too after I know what this is and how to treat.

I want to replace the substrate possibly with eco-complete I have, but may add this gravel back to the top, unless the algae will be easier to treat if everything is gone from previous home.

I already scrubbed out the filter tubes, intake and all the white crusty crystalized gunk around all the rim and pump.
*(reminds me of a salt tank, don't remember ever having that stuff on a freshwater tank.) could it be they added salt, none mentioned nor included with supplies? or could it be because it had really hard water or maybe because it's an all in one tank hood?

I think that is all the info I can come up with so far. Thanks everyone! I am so in awe of the knowledge of the users on this site!

I had that black algae once. I read that it is caused from to much light. What I did was take everything I could out of the tank and gave it all a chlorine bath then rinse, rinse, and rinse some more. Then put them back in the tank. I haven't had a problem with it since then.

yep, to much light.... I do have lava rock in all my tanks, and I never scrub them, if they get pulled out they are allowed to dry, and when they go back into a tank, they go in as is.... they are my "garden" rocks. Algea can be a good indicator that something is wrong in your tank, plus it gives the fish something to graze on. I do however remove it from my fake plants and the glass, I only allow it to grow on the lava rocks.

Some people dont like any algea at all, and if you are one of those, you can always get the algea rid from the lfs. But if you plan on putting live plants in there, it will kill those too. The other option is to scrub before each water change and you will be doing that at each water change because you will not be able to get rid of all of it, and some of the small particles will reattach somewhere else.

They are black skirted tetras.

Your shrimp and snails will love to eat that algae, I would leave it be.

As you mentioned live plants will help with the algae. Actually the gravel is pea gravel you can get from Lowes/Homedepot for aound $4 a bag. I would do the pea gravel and root tabs for a small tank with some live plants, Nerite snails and shrimp will take care of it in no time as it is free food for them. I actually like having some algae in my tanks.

Thank you Fern for their name as I just could not remember. That was helpful to learn their care.

I don't mind a little bit of algae either, especially since I do want the shrimp and snails to reproduce, just wanted to make sure this algae wasn't the "bad" kind that is nearly impossible to treat and no animals like to eat.

Now off to learn how to make everything perfect breeding conditions for my shrimpies!

There really isn't a 'bad' algae...... at least that I am aware of!
