| I've never had good luck keeping snails but decided I was going to try again with this ramshorn. I've always had mystery snails before. Either their shells would get soft and break or they would just die for no apparent reason. My tanks have never had copper in them, I don't use any "airborn" chemicals(i.e.- Lysol or air freshener sprays) and I use vinegar for my floors and such. So I know it couldn't be copper poisoning or fumes/overspray contamination. My alkalinity has always been pretty stable as I lace my gravel with a bit of crushed coral(even in softwater systems, I just use less) to keep from having unexpected pH crashes. So, after much research the only culprit I could come up with is a lack of iodine after coming across a site that said it's needed for them to process calcium to harden their shells. Does anyone know if ramshorns, or any other snail for that matter, should need any type of supplementation? And are ramshorns plant safe or should I not even bother planting this tank? He's a little guy(girl?) right now at not even a half inch "tall" yet. I want to get started on the right foot this time. | |

| I have ramshorns in my RCS tank, and they aren't nearly as prolific as pond snails. I put a few egg shells in the HOB filter and have never had a problem with them. They've never eaten any plants I've kept in there either. The red ones are really pretty. | |

| Sounds like you are doing all the right things. The only plants mine eat are the dying leaves so they are pretty good in planted tanks. The crushed coral is a good calcium source for them. If you ever want any more I have plenty! |

| not to , but what do the snails eat? and how much of a population problem can they be (I have heard how 2 can turn into a few hundred really fast)? | |

| They eat left over food, dying plant bits and algae. The less food they have the less they reproduce. |
