Oil spill???? Empty
PostSubject: Oil spill????   Oil spill???? Icon_minitime3/4/2010, 9:37 am

So I got home from work yesterday and noticed this film of oil or something on the top surface of the entire tank. As I fed the fish the filmy substance broke up like an oil spill on water. The tank has been up and running with all the levels of Ntr. Amna.Ph. at normal. Everything in the tank I have reused from the tank befor and never had this problem.

Any ideas?

What is your substrate?
Any live plants?

I have had this before on my 75g planted tank, mine went from oily to foamy and went away within a month, It was just a bio film in my case though.

You can skim it off the surface of the water using a bowl or something.

I am using gravel and no live plants. That's my plan tonight, i will skim the surface and 10% water change. So nothing to worry about then?

Any possibility someone messed with the tank?

I don't think so... Just skim off as much as you can and keep doing so till its gone. test your water and be sure nothing is off.

In skimming it off.. i have found dropping a paper towel flat on your water surface can mop up all the shine.... but i use VIVA super strong and dont tear when in water... also use it to wipe inside glass of my tanks... lol

I added a source of surface agitation when I've found this in a tank.
Amazing what one airstone can accomplish!

you get it alot if you use Prime.. it's nothing bad really, just an eyesore but more surface agitation and it'll go away.

There is another type of surface film caused by the Eisenbacteria (Iron bacteria). This film appears to be whitish, much thinner and breaks easily on touch. Improving surface agitation will help in combating this kind of film.
