I have only used the ammonia method and it has worked great for us. I like to know that I can put a load of fish in and I have enough bacteria to support it. I suppose it's just all personal preference and experience. As long as you know what you are doing and use the right ammonia, it works great. cloudy water during cycle for freshwater - Page 2 393849 I just don't like killing fish I suppose, or putting them through all the ups and downs of getting a tank cycled. Like I said, just my personal preference. :)

The fish food method (fishless); 1st day put in enough food to feed 20-30 fish, then feed the empty tank till all the levels have cycled though and gotten normal then you do a 75% water change and add fish.

Ya you get the cheapest flake you can find to do it that way, other than the first day is small pinches per day...

id usually get used medias from another filter or tank and drop it all in the new tank and wait about a day or two and add a couple of fish afterward.. works fine so far. The gunkiest and nastiest you can find the better.
