| When i had my tropical/ south american tank they were way more active if i fed with the lights off. But now that i switched to my Africans they prefer the light on. They wont eat at all with light off, it just falls down to the sand and sits for the cats to come in and clean up. | |

| I go both ways. Morning no lights, nite with lights on. My fish arent real picky though, they are just happy to be fed... | |

| AFRICAN CICHLIDS IN THE WILD HIDE AT NIGHT TO KEEP FROM BEING EATEN. THAT IS Y THE AFRICAN CICHLIDS ARE MORE ACTIVE WHEN LIGHTS ARE ON. I SAW IT IN A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT LAKE MALAWI. SO I THINK EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE IN A TANK ENVIROMENT THEY ARE STILL PROGRAMMED TO HIDE WHEN IT IS DARK. MINE ARE MORE ACTIVE WITH THE LIGHTS ON AND AS SOON AS THE LIGHTS GO OFF THE HUDDLE IN A CORNER OR IN THE ROCKS AND THAT IS WHEN MY CATS COME OUT TO PLAY. | |

| I use that to my advantage. I feed mine at 7-8pm with the lights on, then I turn it off and wait til about 10pm, then I add the sinking wafers for my plecos to come out and eat. That way the plecos and the cichlids aren't fighting for food. | |

| I do it with the light on so when the fish poop, there will be more bacteria to multiply. | |

| Well, i feed mine in the morning with only the room light on, so its dimly lit in the tanks. my fry esp. like eating this way.. esp my tpimpwe, they lurch at food like little pfish. At nite all my big fish get to eat with the light on over the tanks, as well as all the fry fish. | |
