This is Martha she is about the same age as Fred. I'm not sure if its a he or she. She has been on a hunger strike for the past month and wont eat much but I will address that under diseases and disasters. She is about 2" at my best guess Martha the flowerhorn DSCN1588Martha the flowerhorn DSCN1590Martha the flowerhorn DSCN1591Martha the flowerhorn DSCN1592Martha the flowerhorn DSCN1595 Here she is stalking the red jewel fry I put with her in hopes of getting her to eat.Martha the flowerhorn DSCN1598Martha the flowerhorn DSCN1599

Definitely looks female. I've never seen a male vent that was rounded towards the anal fin. Normally a male will be pointed. Good chance Martha is named correctly.

If you can get a pic of Fred's vent, I can definitely tell you for sure. If they are different that is...

They are a hybrid of various American cichlids and most of the species they are made from have humps, the bigger the kok (hump) the more they tend to be worth.
The flowerhorn is considered a luck fish in many countries, people will pay hundreds of dollars for one with a big kok. If it has Chinese or Japanese lettering in it's pattern then they can go for thousands.

That's not accurate because they change so much during the course of their life!

You also have to look at growth. Males will obviously grow much faster. Females will stop at some point.

Thats not relevant with them, Martha decided not to eat anything for a month and Fred always ate like a pig.

True. But I've always found female fish to be pickier while males will eat like pigs, so it's not unusual. I'm not trying to argue, but there is an explanation for everything sometimes...
