Hey all, its been awhile! I was wondering how you tell the difference between male and female Red Terrors and what are the breeding behaviors of each one. We thought we may have eggs but we want to be sure.

After further discussion it has been brought to my attention that these may not be red terrors. Anybody know what they are?

Thanks. Those are two beautiful fish. Mine are plain ol' red terrors. I think she has laid eggs but I am not sure. Both red terrors are acting strange and more aggressive than unsual.

Here are pics of the two. I think the smaller one is the male and the larger more red one is the female.

I dont know much about cichlids, but i looked up some pictures of Red Terrors. Your fish dont seem to have the black spot near the end of their tail. Here are some examples.

Red Terror Red-terror-cichlid-1

But other than the spot i cant see much difference.

tru red terrors will have the strip that looks like an upside down h going up over the forehead. females dont seem to connct between those stripes. top and lower fins will turn darker blue/black while males stay lighter with the red tips.
already pointed out by somebody, true red terror has that spot on the upper portion of the tail. i have red terror and my friend has a female. ill try to get pictures up

Yes, I now know that my smaller one is the female and the larger is the male. I am 100% sure the female is a true red terror (though its hard to see she does have the spot on the tail) but not sure about the male. I took them to 3 lfs and all three said she was a true red terror and 2 of the three said that he was too but one said could be or could not be.

check really close on the rear fin of the male. it really should have that spot. the stripes close to the head look close to red terror but could be the imitation. still a great fish. look up pictures and articles on the maiyan cichlid. you can compare the two.

Defiantly not a Mayan cichlid. I catch those things all the time.

The first three photos are not true red terrors. They are exCichlasoma urophthalmus. The fourth photo and Mo's fish are true exCich. festae. Sexing the real thing is quite easy at 4-5"+. Females will not have any spangling on them and will be dark red to bright orange with some striping. Males will have spangling in the unpaired fins and be more green/red with a green operculum.

If I could figure out how to post a photo, I would post some pix of a breeding pair that I had awhile back.

The smaller one (female) is only about 3in. The male has significantly changed in color since I took the picture.

Im sorry-I didnt realize you posted the two photos.

Those two are exCich. uropthalmus 100%. Most LFS have no clue how to tell the difference.
