Jalo Reefs have little-to-No barring that goes into their dorsal fins. Yours looks like it has pretty strong barring that extends all the way back. Dorsal fins should also be bright yellow. Yours seems to have more blue with a yellow haze. It might be a different type of Afra... or not fully matured.

| Nick a... That is a really nice Pundamilia Nyererie Red Ruti Island ( I am assuming) that you have as you Avatar.
I am very interested in lake victorians, but it is so hard to find nice ones in louisiana. Any suggestings...

| That may be C. afra from Hai Reef/Undu Point. I think it is probably from Mbenji. See below for the photos of wild adults by Ad Konings of the two fish. Mbenji is 2nd from the bottom on the left. Undu Point (next to Hai Reef in the lake) is the third one from the bottom on the right. The fish in Curtis' photo is a bit more elongated and the yellow dorsal comes down further into the body. Another reason I believe that it is probably Mbenji is that the largest collector of Malawi Cichlids on Lake Malawi is Stuart Grant's facility in Salima, Malawi now run by Stuart's widow. They don't have a license to collect in Tanzanian or Mozambique waters although they did have the permit for Mozambique for over a decade ending last year. They have not collected in Tanzania ever...to my knowledge. Hai Reef/Undu Point is just north of the border of Moz in Tanz. Laif Demason has a collection station in Tanzania but is nowhere as large as Stuart's facility. Mbenji is one of the most popular collection points in the lake and less than 30km from the collection station in Salima. Just my .02. Its difficult to ID these types of fish from locations in the lake. | |
