| Having an extra male just means the Alpha male might display his colors more often to show dominance. I'd keep at least another male and get rid of one. Plus if you end of losing a male due to illness/injury...you would still have a "back-up" | |

You could add more females to the mix but I would not add anymore males. | |

| I've often found that 2 males is the worst possible number for Mbuna. The subdom often gets completely trashed. 1 male works very well and (depending on tank size) 3 + males helps spread out the dom male's attention ---and can actually benefit the females. 2 females is the absolute minimum. The upper number is limited only by the tank size. As long as you have females for him to court, a single male will be fully colored up most (if not all) of the time anyway. Males can be reproductively active for at least 5 years/females tend to decrease in 'activity' as they get of a certain age LOL! This 3 year old afra Cobwe shares a species only 40BR with 8 females, stays colored up all the time and the group breeds regularly. | |

| I would agree 100% with Nick. The only thing I have to add is that although having more females than males is preffered, I would not remove the extra males. Dominant males like to do two things: 1: breed. 2: beat stuff up. As you have them now, he has two males to pick on and two females to breed with. Remove your two males, and he has two females to breed with AND pick on. | |
