Ok, so I have decided that I think I want to do an African Cichlid tank... I am a bit low on funds so it is going to be a gradual thing. I am a bit limited on space as well but plan on picking up an aquarium at the petco sale. I have heard 55 gallon is the smallest you can really use and I think I can swing that. From what I have seen in pics I will need to have some rock structure/driftfood and sand/gravel for substrate. What kinda ph's do I generally want to hit and what else do I need to know. I am trying to get out of my comfort zone and try something new, thanks everyone.

Africans like a higher ph like 7.6-8.2. I use pool filter sand and any kind of rocks that won't leach stuff in the water

well to the club lol. they are super easy to care for (most species). you can keep them in a smaller tank (shellies) but it really depends on the species you are going with.

A breeder 40 is a better aquarium than a 55. Reason more surface area. Good luck on your new adventure.

For substrate, how much crushed coral should I use... Do I need to mix something with it?

I would mix it with sand. What sand you get really depends on what you like

Cool, I'm a newbie to africans too. I'm really enjoying them! They're so active. It's neat to watch. Looking forward to seeing how your tank develops. Newbie @ Africans 393849

Its not out of date though. I still havent gotten the tank set up how I want it, and do not know if it will be african cichlids though...

Lots of good choices out there. Gotta decide what you want in order to set it up (for example: some fish like rock, while others like sand)
