| For those of us who have shrimp that will breed in freshwater or have fish breeding where we want to keep the fry alive I have found women's knee high panty hose to be the most effective pre-filter. You can put the pantyhose over intakes of HOB filters, canister filters, power heads (I run reverse flow so my powerhead sits on a sponge filter {hydro sponge pro} and blows the water and air down the riser plate of the undergravel filter system), over sponge filters.
This keeps the shrimplets, eggs, and fry from being chewed up by impellers, or from you finding living fish/shrimp/snails in your canister filters.
I tried this as I couldn't find a fine enough dense foam and was always finding living shrimplets/fish fry in my sponge when I would go to clean it. Total cost can be as little as $1.00 US for four pair of knee high on up.
Also the biofilm that will accumulate on the pantyhose pre-filter will get eaten up by your shrimp, snails, or other critters in your tank.

| hardest part is retainng your flow at start up as you will pick up all kinds of small debris that will clog your panty hose.. I take off intake leaving panty hose intact and rinse in another tank or under filtered water. Re-install intake and flow will be good for quite a while.

| Well I don't know... you see divers used to wear panty hose to make it easier to get in and out of the old wetsuits, and Football players used to wear them to help keep them warm and reduce friction when they ran...... Panty hose for women only? Dave | |

| Never said pantyhose is for women only but without women wearing them to begin with (starting in showbiz), men would not have had them.
