What is my new baby?

Ok , I give up !!

I got this baby from some one who knows nothing about cichlids.. they had this baby in
with guppies and swordtails and kept wondering why some of her fish was dead..

yes he was the biggest in the tank.. .. not saying much for this baby is one 1/2" inch big baby .. :)

I have adopted him to my family

but what is the breed?

Hey Juliet we have 2 female Nimbochromis Venustus that look very similiar to your baby. Since we have never had fry from either (think the large female harassed the male to death) I've never seen them that small but the markings look just like them. Here's a pic from Dave's Rare Aquarium Fish site........didn't have one available to show you of my own.



We also had a Super VC 10 (Haplochromis milomo) that looked just like this pic. Since the mouth protrudes in a similar way just made me think of the one we "used to have".....one of those mysterious deaths.

I dont think thats a venustus,maybe some kinda south american cichlid

Her fish has markings below the lateral line , the Salvini does not . Hmmmm.

I would have to say a very unhappy salvini that is not showing any of its yellows or red , with care I'm sure it will come around

I would say a salvini and? It looks like a cross. Same body as a salvini. I agree about the markings being wrong .

I thought they were wrong too but when i looked threw a bunch of pics the smaller stressed out salving had those vertical bars , so idk if its stressed out or a cross :/

Looks like a Salvini or Salvini hybrid,but definitely has Salvini in it!I use to have Salvini's and thats what they looked like!

I have Venustus and frys they do not look like them..

and yes the baby was stressed.. that was first day home.

Nandopsis salvini, formerly known as Cichlasoma salvini, Salvin's cichlid is a member of a group of large predatory cichlids known as Guapotes. They hold their own and go by little guapotes . They live up to it. Telling females from males is typically done by a black spot on the dorsal.
