It appears that it was my pair of mbuna BB zebras that survived. And the 1/2" fry appears to be from them, it has the same pattern and they seem to be protecting it. Can I keep them in the 20L over summer break? Can I leave their fry with them for a while?

I really wasn't expecting them to be old enough to breed until this fall. And I sure wasn't expecting the problem with the 55G. I don't have room at home for the 55G - but I can find room for the 20L. I really don't want to set anything up in the 55G until next school year.

They may be a little over crowded in a 20L but africans do pretty in overcrowded conditions as long as you keep up with water changes and have good filtration. The fry can stay with them. Good Luck

I agree with Dan, they should be ok as long as you keep up with the water changes and give lots of rock caves. Mostly africans will protect their fry, and if the parents are the only adults in the tank, they will be fine.

Use some rock work in the tank. Small river stones will do the trick. Just put them in a pile so that the fry can hide. The adults (the females) will only care for them for a short period and then they become snacks for the other fish! Try to get yourself a 10 to 15 gallon tank as a nursery tank. I hope I was a help. Good luck the rest of the way!!!
