| Hello, I have a nice planted tank with beautiful Discus in it. The plants now have hair algae on them. I have some algae eaters but it just does not seem like they are doing the job. Is there any other fish that will eat the hair algae and not my plants? Please help!
Thank you, Freaky Piglet

| I had this problem in my panfish 55G. After throwing two small plecos and one large pleco in it - I haven't had to sponge it off since! (small plecos are now 5" plecos) Don't know what kind of algae eaters you are using, but I've had good success using multiple plecos.
I also added duckweed to the tank as well. This could also have impacted the hair algae by reducing the nutrient level in the water column.

| I have had problems with hair algae but mainly when the nutrients going into the tank where out of balance and the plants couldn't grow as quickly as they wanted to and so the algae took over. Depending on what type of algae eaters you have many of them won't touch select forms of algae which becomes very annoying.
If you can get your hands on them I highly suggest SAE (Siamese algae eater) just make sure you get the real ones! The Chinese algae eaters will grow up and pick on fish. The flowing fox is also another fake variant of the SAE. If you do a little research you can find out how to properly identify one. These little guys (grows to 6inches) eat almost anything! They unlike my otos prefer to eat off of plants. The otos I have like to sit on the glass and eat where as the SAE jump from plant to plant eating just the algae off of it and leave the plant unharmed. As 2Sci said Plecos do a great job at cleaning everything just keep in mind some types do get very large and if you got a couple of them they would quickly outgrow most normal tanks sizes.
