| I've read the post about tank size for discus, were looking to buy a few discus about 1 inch. How fast do these fish grow? How long till they out grow a 36g tank? How many should I start with? I read 6, but a 1in how long till I need a bigger tank? Thanks | |

| id say 5 to 6 juvies and if you feed em 3 times a day with a before sleep snack and do weekly waterchanges you would need to upgrade in like 3 or 4 months | |

| 4 04 5 would be good and if you keep up with water changes you could keep then in there probly 8 or 9 months they grow in spurts | |

| I would wait till you have a 55g or 75g. A well cared for well bred discus can reach 9-11" in 2 years. They are very easily stunted. A stunted fish is prone to getting issues a lot, I know, I have a very stunted discus I have almost lost 2 times now........ |

| I agree with Fern not only could the fish get stunted by why would you want to switch them out of the tank if you do not have to? Discus can easily be effected by stress from switching tanks especially if you go to a larger tank where you will have to add water (if you go 75 gal thats almost double the water so parameters will change) even with r/o water you are still taking a risk that is not neccesary if you are planning on upgrading.
As far as how fast the grow mine went from 1" to 3"+ in about 2 months feeding 5x daily and 10-20% h2o changes bi weekly. I am feeding beef heart flake(little goes a long way) earthworm flakes, hikari discus pellets (for the smaller discus larger guys 4"+ do not even bother with it), frozen discus food (brine, blood worms, spirulina, white worms, daphina, beef heart and nori seaweed) I occasionally have fed them live food I hated doing this, but it was all that my 6" turq would eat after I brought her home, now she is getting back to flake and frozen. I also will mix in some serta vitamins and garlic extreme every now and then for immunity boost. I would reccomend mixing their food up just so they will accept a variety and not get stuck on only one type.
On a side note I really like the seaweed if you can get them to eat it has about 58% protein which is awesome for making them grow...I was feeding it to some AB plecos and discus went to town on it so now I add it to all of my fish's diets. I buy it at harris teeter which is usually cheaper than the pet stores and you get more weight in the package.

| I have found it in flakes also in a oriental store here, but once soaked they are almost full size leaves. |
