| One of my students brought this to me - can't have it anymore due to a situation. Unusual coloration. Looks soft silvery with pink in the finnage. [img] [/img] | |

| Looked up Elfwolfe's idea on the Mustard. Here's what I found on Chocolate and Mustard. Mustard Gas Betta: http://jurabetta.deviantart.com/art/Mustard-gas-Halfmoon-Betta-78533761 Chocolate Betta: https://2img.net/h/i25.photobucket.com/albums/c89/BettySplendens/chocolate.jpg I found a discription for a 'copper' in this article. http://bettysplendens.com/articles/page.imp?articleid=1417 Here's some better pics I hope. He's not a happy betta being in a temp travel container tonight. He really does have more pinkish in his finnage than yellow. I'm at a toss up between a steel Chocolate and this Copper description. What are you guys' votes? [img] [/img] [img] [/img] | |

| Yeah, the more I'm reading and looking at pictures - the more he looks like a chocolate. A copper has iredescence - which he doesn't have. So I think you guys are right - I've got a Hershey. Well, only thing they recommend breeding him to - is another chocolate or a yellow. neither of which is common enough for me to find local. Guess he's gonna be a desk ornament. Hmmmmm, what type of planted tank do I want to create next........ | |

| He looks silver to me but hard to tell from the picture. When you look at him does he look brown or a silvery color or maybe a gray. Silver is usually in the plakets or Dragons but certainly could be in a HM. Defenently not MG ( Mustard Gas) Here is one of my males that is a Black lace MG. You can see they faint yellow in his fins. This is a male I had too. Does yours look like this? | |

| He's soft silver body with slight pink tinge to finnage. I've been emailing an ibc judge about him. He calls him a Copper with non-spread iridescence. Your MG is gorgeous! Did see a very nice HM ST mustard gas at my friend's petstore on Wed. Very dramatic royal blue body, deep yellow finnage with blue outlines. NICE bicolor combo My friend got in this female for me - after I mentioned I might be interested in a yellow. And gave her to me - since I'd gotten bored on yet another snow day and started to teach her new employee and daughter how to display items on shelves for better sales (What can I say? LOVE 'playing retail' at my family's florist. Just don't like 'working' retail anymore) [img] [/img] [img] [/img] According to the genetics I've been studying/learning - female should be: blbl SiSi cc ErEr nrnr and either yellow type 1 or yellow type 2... (laymens terms: steel blue + Spread iridescence + cambodian + extended red + non-red and either yellow 1 or yellow 2) Might also have an Opaque as well - I'm asking the judge about her now. Still trying to figure out the possible genetics behind the unusual male. | |

| Here's what I'm thinking on the male - going from Layer 1 to Layer 4 of color:
Layer 1: bl bl si si - Steel blue + non-spread iridescence. According to ibc gives the look of a silver glow on non-blue. Possibly an Opaque gene to lighten underlying shades of color.
Layer 2: CC - normal dark body. Possibly mm - melano or another one of the black genes. Possibly br br - reduced red/pastel shade to lighten him.
Layer 3: Er Er - exended red. Must have this to have red/yellow hues in finnage in chocolates/coppers.
Layer 4: either Yellow 1 or Yellow 2.
From what little I can find on coppers, they are Black/Yellow genetically. Coppers have iridescence and chocolates don't.

| The male is a "copper". The variation combos to create them are endless, It will be hard to know genetics on him unless you can find out where he was bought or breed. Your female is beautiful. Every cambodian I've had has been a crown tail. I had a steel blue with yellow 2 and ErEr and she was more orange. No yellow showed in her. With yours I'm sure the nrnr has brought out the beautiful yellow. I never studied the yellows really so this is an uneducated guess. If you find out please let us know. |

| Nice female. Her caudal looks spiky. Is she a CT?......That second male that I posted is out of a Pheno Melano Black HM male. The mother was a blue HM. Go figure. I had loads of marbles, cellos, and solid blues but out of three breedings with the black boy never another Black. :( | |

| Yeah, all but one of my females is a CT. Can only find VT or CT females around here. This yellow is very small, probably very young. Like all the others, she came through a transhipper in a bulk order. But at least she's expressing recessive genes. | |

| Haven't decided if I'm going to try this summer or not. The females just look so pretty in my moss tank. Their interactions are almost as intriguing as my Mbunas. Fish with distinct personalities for sure!
I'm having so much fun just trying to figure out potential genetics of various bettas now that I have a good expert to discuss the possibilities with. Much more interesting genetics due to the 4 layers than when I bred/showed rare cockatiels in my teens, or stood Appaloosa stallions a decade ago, or bred rare breed goats a few years ago.
If I decide to try - it doesn't mean I'll be successful anyway. Not as simple as breeding the apple snails or guppies.

| No definitely not as easy as guppies. Many failures even with experienced breeders. Don't give up on the first try if it doesn't work out. | |

| From what I understand, the red wash isn't a desirable trait and is usually bred out?
I would be more interested to see what you come out with tail wise rather than color if you bred the ct with the hm. That is an hm male right?

From what I now understand, you can't get a Melano offspring unless both parents are carrying the recessive genes. You'd have luck if you crossed him on a daughter. Jennyfur - I've seen some exceptional red washed coppers that truly looked like fresh minted pennies. So some breeders are trying to enhance it I'm sure. As for the finnage, I haven't researched it nearly as much as the colors since I'm simply more intrigued by them. From what I've read, CT is a semi-dominant, so it will show up in a percentage of offspring. HM genetics are a bit more of a trade secret - but the early development by the second group of breeders to get their hands on some - recorded them outcrossing the original inbred specimens heavily to DTs in order to strengthen the resulting generations. HM is apparently NOT true breeding, but is a combination of several genes. So I suspect I should get DTs and DT CTs all carriers for HM. I did find a second brilliant yellow CT female - who has blue eyes. Depending on how my first experience goes this summer, I may cross 'Copper' with both yellow CT females. Theoretically, crossing the F1 half-siblings would then have the possibility to produce HM, DT, CT and combinations - as well as coppers, yellows, even melanos. But that's a ways off... (Providing I'm even successful the first time) Here's the male I have in quaranteen: In real life you can see that he's got spread iridescent sheen, blue eyes, either a cellophane or yellow dragon - and I think he's a SD. (He was marked as a CT female) I'm debating on crossing him with the yellow blue-eyed CT, and then maybe the iridescent Purple CT or Iridescent blue CT. I'm becoming more convinced that these two females are of heavy iridescence phenotype the more I research it. As is my original HM Multi male. What can I say? Exploring and finding out the genetics behind each fish phenotype just fascinates the Biologist in me. I'd really like to explore the blue eyes now. Find out if they're directly related to the pale body scales - or can be inherited separately.
