| Okiedokie, so last Thursday I set up my tank, on Friday I bought 3 little pieces of Live Rock to seed the rest of my dead rock. I think what is happening is the bacteria is just spreading but before I get too super excited I thought I'd check with everyone and make sure that Imnot having a catostrophic failure lol. The attached pic shows groth about 1.5-2 days old. Thanks for any replies | |

| the growth you see is algae. IT IS DIATOMS. When you starta new tank there are certain things in water and well the light makes it have blooms. If you want good coraline algae wich is the purple rock/plate you can not have algae on your rocks. mexican turbo snailswill clean the brown algae right up. Brightwell aquatics has a 2 part that is awesome as well as purple up . I am not a big fan of calcium reactors or kalkwasserr stirriers. I would just ad the three mentioned chemicals. Remeber you cant have calcium without having alkalinity. You need both of them for it top be good system. The Brown algae/diatoms is not bad its just part of a new set up | |

| 2 part is just calcium and kalkwasser. The reactors improve the uptake of both. Calcium reactors use CO2 to lower ph for better calc absorption, and the kalk reactors are generally used with ATO to keep your alk up while you're topping off. Either way, you're not going to see much in the way of coralline in 2 weeks. 2-3 months maybe, but not 2 weeks. A lot of people swear by purple up, but staying on top of calcium and alkalinity will produce coralline anyway. | |

| Looks like thats Red Algae or Diatoms. Check your parameters. Your phosphates may be high. | |

| purple up is strictly a fertilizer . and the 2 part system i am talking about is not what you are talking about you are talking about a product that is like c-balance. Brightwell Aquatics has 2 separate components. One is ALKALINITY other is Calcium. They can not be added at the same time you must ad part one in the sump wait roughly 20 minutes than the second part. If the 2 components interact with out being dissolved they turn to concrete. Coraline will take time to grow but more importantly you must have a piece of rock with coraline on it or it will not grow. | |
