Brazilian ichthyologists have described a new species of tetra that superficially resembles the Silver-tipped tetra (Hasemania nana).

Angela Zanata and Priscila Camelier name the new tetra Hyphessobrycon brumado in the most recent issue of the journal Neotropical Ichthyology after the river in northeastern Brazil it was discovered.

Hyphessobrycon brumado is distinguished from congeners in having a broad black stripe on the sides of the body that extend to the tips of the middle caudal-fin rays, the absence of humeral spots, the presence of 14–17 branched anal-fin rays, body and fin proportions (including chiefly a more slender body), and an orange- to reddish colour in life.

According to the authors, the species was collected in fast-flowing streams with rocky and sandy bottoms.

Analysis of gut contents revealed algae, plant fragments, aquatic invertebrates (chiefly insect larvae), as well as terrestrial arthropods.

Last but not least, the new tetra is easily distinguished from the Silver-tipped tetra in having an adipose fin (which the Silver-tipped tetra lacks).
