| I got a quick question about slate where can I find slate that won't cost a arm or a leg.. I need some slate so I can drill some holes in it to hold down some driftwood... the LFS charge to much, I need a decent amount of it. I know quiz-q in ft. worth is good but I'm all the way in plano. | |

| They dont have a whiz Q up that way somewhere? If you can't find any on CL for free then Whiz Q is the best place. Place a add on CL for Looking for stuff. | |

| with Fern. I get all of my rock from a large landscaper supply. This said, you need to be aware of a few things: Red/deep brown slates will generally contain a lot of iron (hematites) Black slates may contain a lot of carbon (from a forest region) - or a lot of Mg. (Volcanic region) Cream/light colored slates may contain a lot of carbonate/calcium Sandstones that are golden are generally made of silicates and won't have a great impact on water chemistry. | |

| You could always purchase a bottom dish tray for clay pots they come in 8,10,12 and larger in inches, drill your piece of wood and with a nice big tie wrap sinch the two pieces together the dish will sit on the bottom and fill it with what ever you are using as substrate, its work for me extremely well the dishes are only about 3/4 of an inch high so making it disapear wont be hard and after all is said and done dont think you will have spent 10 dollars, hope this helps. | |

| I've done that and just put a hole in the center then used a large washer and screw to attach it. |

| If you are looking for slate check out garden shops usually they sell it in bulk for landscaping, but they often sell it by the pound alot cheaper than pet stores | |

| With those pieces I would get a piece if light grating the size of the whole tank and tie wood down with fishing line put it in empty tank and cover in gravel |
