| Subject: 3 empty tanks any suggestions.... 12/17/2010, 8:51 am | |
| Just set up a 50g community tank. Two weeks ago I got it cheap off of CL. Combined everything out of my 2 10g tanks and my 15g tank... gravel, fake plants.. etc. For filteration I bought a 70g h.o.b. filter but am also running the all three filters from the now empty tanks until bacteria builds up in the new filter. Anyways.......... NOW I HAVE 3 EMPTY TANKS!!!!
They are all on one stand and this is what I am thinking about doing....
I have never had live plants and know nothing about them so I think its time to learn!
Any suggestions on where to start.... substrate? lighting? fish? etc..
Just to note... I have another 3-4 weeks to plan before I will be moving the 3 filters back to these tanks. Also because these three tanks are side by side (60 inches combined), I hope to be able to hang one long light across all 3 tanks.
All suggestions welcome! | |

| If I had 3 small empty tanks I would use them to grow out my fry or maybe a new species of shrimp. If I did not have any breeding and wanted to go the other route. I would do some Shellies, new species of shrimp or some kind of plant that dose not need a great amount of light. Not to much you can do with 10G's other then some smaller species. You don't want to get something that will out grow that tank. Seems like you will soon get the urge to get more tanks and bigger ones....we call that MTS...most of us here have it so don't feel out of place. | |

| Welcome to USAfishbox. 10 and 15 gal are great for planted tanks I have 10 gal planted. I use a cheap bag of potting soil (1 inch)covered with pea gravel (just enough to cover dirt.) I spent less than $8 for a 55 gal tank for soil and gravel at Lowes. For lighting I would do clip on construction lamps (walmart $7) and a screw base 26W CFB which = 100W. The smallest Hob you have is all the filtration you need. Sags, Vals, swords, Java, Stems almost any plant will grow in if. The Banditos would look great. I myself have endlers in it. |

| FishVixen, not to thread jack, but I'm wondering about the gravel thing. I have four 25 pound bags of pea gravel from Home Depot. I was going to use it for tanks but was afraid it would be too sharp for plants. It's the type you use for, say, decorative walkways around pavers and whatnot. Would that work? Right now they're just keeping the puppy from slipping through the gap between the gate and the house but I'm fairly certain I could find something else since she refuses to just grow too big to fit. Every time I see them I think of what a waste it is for them to just sit there. | |

| Hey Jeep I have noticed that the Home Depot gravel is a bit bigger than the Lowes Brand Home Depot is pea gravel...lowes is pea pebbles.. The lowes seems to grow plants better with the smaller size..I have both sizes set up in my 55 and HD plants are doing ok...lowes plants are going crazy Just my 2Cents | |
