| The Council of Agriculture in Taiwan surprised the world last week by stating that they had successfully created fluorescent cichlids. These cichlids were created by breeding trangenic Convict cichlids and Angelfish. The creation of this fish was the brain child of the Academia Sinica, Taiwan’s national research academy, and took just shy of 7 years to accomplish. Some other innovative fish that this group has cooked up are the GloFish Zebra danio (Danio rerio) and the fluorescent Medaka (Oryzias latipes). These fish have been authorized for sale, and quite popular, since 2003 when they first hit the market in Taiwan as an aquarium fish. Dr. Chih-Yi Chen, the head of the investigative team which created this cichlid, has stated that creating this cichlid took a lot of effort because of the lack of control they had over the spawning process, as compared to the smaller fish they previously tinkered with. The scientists had to literally sit by the aquarium and wait for the fish to spawn so that the gene fragments could be immediately inserted into the Convict cichlid eggs. If it is not injected immediately, the results don’t seem to take.. This made the whole process very fickle. An even greater obstacle was overcome, when they were in the process of spawning the fluorescent angelfish, as the couldn’t use micro-injection techniques in the same manner as with the Convict cichlids. In this case, they needed to apply an electric field to the cell membrane, in order to inject the gene fragments. Well, they pulled it off.. The only question now is… What the heck is it good for? A fish nightlight? Video here http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/news/lib/611 | |

| I think that there are enough beautiful species in the world that they should leave the fish to nature.
I think they should put all their breeding knowledge to use on replenishing near extinct species. I just don't know if the captive bred ones could be released back into the wild to repopulate since you would risk spreading disease.

| Now thats going to leave weak emmune system, weak dna, and some other disease that will genetically destroy the species of that particular breed. It will hav fevistating consequences that we humans tend to forget and in doing so making ourselves believe that we are gods. In truth we are the weakest link of the animal kingdom and we should've syayed there | |

I am curious as to why you say we are the weakest link?

| The only thing tha keep us from getting over by anything is our brains, how smart we are. Like how would u.survive a poisoness snake bite if we didnt hav the medical anti_venom, or how would u survive a bear mauling if we didnt have medical means of supplying blood to u and how to get rid of invection. Then reconstruct ur skin so u look a little normal compare to wat u would look lik if we didnt have the means to do it. Im allergic to penecillin but we have antibiorics that would work for me wat if we didnt hav that I would not of survived the invection in my mouth or me getting sick but couldnt take any meds bc of them being related to penecillin. Wat would happen if we didnt have so much smartness, wat would happen to the weakest being society. Think about wat we have created and wat it took to be.wat we are. Wat we destroyed to get this far, most fish species are dying of poison, were losing some endanger species that are vital to the eco-system. | |

| Lol I read to many books and watch the discovery channel, animal planet and history channel but it is wat I luv to learn. If I had a choice I would go back and ride horses for the planet and be an native american bc of wat they believe in. they hav more respect for the land that white ppl and it is sad that we lost that respect. Just riding horses, working with those intellegent creatures makes u respect them more for wat they did for us and that they would trust us with their lives but all we do is starve them beat them and send them to slaughter even though thwir ancestors bore us on their back and did things that wild horses would never do. Carry our things running in battle even though they are scared to death but.we urged them forward and they respond to our confidence. Thats wat we are, we dont give a cr@p wat we do to things since we think they are stupid and low forms of life. | |

| Sorry but this is the same cr@p that goes on in any animal that people get in and start messing around with. I don't support people hybridizing any animal. I don't see a point in it. Same with dogs too. There are more than enough mutts in the world, why do people have to see if they can breed everything imaginable with a poodle? | |

| I think it is a shame!!! Years ago, they did it with painted fish!!! They would inject dye in the fish with pretty colors and when people bought these, a few weeks later the color was either faded or was gone completely. All was left was this poor animal looking just awful. To me, it is cruel and a stupid way to promote people to buy in and discourging future hobbist for efer goiung to try again or just give up and leave the hobby. One more footnote to all this insainity, the painted fish only lasted about 3 weeks or so and just refusing to eat and just watching a fish just weather away is sad!!!!! Someone should put an end to this experimental dodo!!!!! Its not natural or cool!!!!! | |
