What tank mates has anyone housed with these or other small shellies? Ive heard you can have calvus with them but I would be scared to do so since they are carnivores and there armor.

I have housed Calvus and shellies together no problem. I would recomend something from Lake Tang. for sure but NOT another species of Shellie.

What about combining them with neolamprologus birchardi's. or frontosa? I think the frontosa would eat them sooner or later. Also woudlnt the calvus eat the shellie fry? Or could you put shellies with tropheus duboisi's lets say?

The brichardis would kill them, once brichardis start breeding they need their own tank.
If your wanting to breed them its easiest to do in a species tank.

I have found that Shellies are VERY TERRITORIAL... esp as adults and start to spawn. they will attack and defend their area, so matter how large its opponent may be, LOL... Because of this i have always maintained my shellies in 10 or 20L tanks with no other fish, esp other shellies!.

This will probably change though...so ask me again in a few hours

L. ocellatus are pretty interesting fish. They are harem spawners. I would have to agree if your aim is to spawn them, I would suggest species tank. They are extremely aggressive and not sure if you've discovered this yet, but if you put your hand or a net in a tank with ocellatus, they will attack you. They're feisty...
