Yup just like you would clean your filter pads in old tank water, just do it in the 100g tank. That will quick cycle it by adding bacteria. Just keep a good eye on your levels and test the water often, if you see ammonia then you stop adding fish till it goes away but keep adding your bacteria. Don't clean the filter pads so good that you cause a mini cycle in your 55g, just do it like you normally would. You will get some nasty dust and such on the sand but that's OK its mostly bacteria.

knock the ants out if you can. Yes old sun bleached wood is best. If only 1/2 will fit in the pot just boil, flip, boil, flip, boil....... Once its waterlogged or mostly waterlogged you can stop, most of your fish will appreciate some tannins so you don't have to boil the dickens out of it

Hmmmm will it fit in your oven? if so take it to 100*F for 15-20 minutes, that should sterilize it then just toss it in the tank, it will sink eventually. You will get more tannins but like I said I believe most of your fish will enjoy the tannins. You will prolly want to toss a few shells in there to help buffer your PH though.

I've got a box of random beach shells that I collected as a kid so I have plenty to spare, most aren't very pretty but they will do the job.
